Evolution of the Lisbon Metro, 1959–2012. The idea of building a system of underground railways for the city of Lisbon first arose in 1888. The Red Line (Portuguese: Linha Vermelha) or Orient Line (Portuguese: Linha do Oriente) is one of the four lines of the Lisbon Metro.
