The USILA conducted a "small college" lacrosse championship tournament in 1972 and 1973. [2] Division II men's lacrosse held its first NCAA tournament in 1974 with an eight-team bracket. The format remained the same until 1980, when the field dropped to just two teams as the Division III tournament was inaugurated.
