The YWCA history dates back to 1855, when the philanthropist Lady Mary Jane Kinnaird founded the North London Home for nurses travelling to or from the Crimean War. [1] The home addressed the needs of single women arriving from rural areas to join the industrial workforce in London, by offering housing, education and support with a "warm Christian atmosphere".

Founded in 1909, the Yakima YWCA originally rented the second floor of Sawbridge's Hardware Store and used the gym from the First Baptist Church. In 1920, the YWCA purchased the land for the building but they were not able to break ground until 1934, when a local businessperson Alexander Miller donated $80,000 toward the effort.
Young Women's Christian Association is a historic YWCA building in Richmond, Virginia. It was built in 1913–1914, and is a three-story, five-bay, brick and stone Renaissance Revival style building. The two-story rear block contains the gymnasium. The building features an elaborately designed entry portico with a curved exterior staircase. [3]
