IMSA chose to drop the New York 500 in 1992, retaining the Continental as an event just for prototypes until 1995. In 1996, IMSA restored the Watkins Glen event to its historic format, combining prototypes and grand tourers once again. By 1998, Watkins Glen chose to schedule the Six Hours as part of the new United States Road Racing Championship.

Glazer Arena is a 6,700-seat indoor arena located in Ithaca, New York. It is used primarily for athletics, and is the home of the Ithaca College Bombers indoor track and field team. The arena, named after Ithaca alumnus Edward ('92) and Shari Glazer, was made possible by their generous donation.

The first permanent course, known as the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Race Course was constructed on 550 acres (2.2 km 2), overlapping part of the previous street course. Designed by Bill Milliken and engineering professors from Cornell University , the 2.350-mile (3.782 km) layout was used from 1956 to 1970.
