Niles is a city in Berrien and Cass counties in the U.S. state of Michigan, near the Indiana state line city of South Bend. The population was 11,988 according to the 2020 census . It is the larger, by population, of the two principal cities in the Niles- Benton Harbor metropolitan area , an area with 153,797 people.
The Chicago Road between Detroit and Chicago was completed through the area in 1832–33, and its location only a few miles south of Niles served to bring settlers into the area. By 1835, Niles had several hundred residents and a village government was established; by 1840, the population was 1200.
Niles Charter Township is a charter township of Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 14,417 at the 2020 census. [3] On June 5, 2006, the township board voted unanimously to approve a resolution for Niles Township to become Niles Charter Township. [4] [5]
In 1834, Chapin moved to Edwardsburg, Michigan, a few miles east of Niles, and started a general store. Ten years later, he entered into a partnership with S. S. Griffin and opened a wool business and general store in Niles. The business failed in 1861, but by 1864 Chapin was out of debt and again prosperous.

Howard Township is located in southwestern Cass County, bordered by Berrien County and the city of Niles to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.3 square miles (91.4 km 2), of which 34.5 square miles (89.4 km 2) is land and 0.77 square miles (2.0 km 2), or 2.17%, is water. Fort Saint Joseph was a fort established on land granted to the Jesuits by King Louis XIV; it was located on what is now the south side of the present-day town of Niles, Michigan. Père Claude-Jean Allouez established the Mission de Saint-Joseph in the 1680s.
