The Michigan Department of Natural Resources lists the park among thirteen state parks established in 1920 following creation of the Michigan State Parks Commission in 1919. [2] Land for the park was donated to the city of Harrison in 1900 by a lumber company, then transferred to the state in 1922. The state park was dedicated in 1927. [3]
East of Bonelli Park is Mountain Meadows Golf Course, and on the west, Via Verde Country Club; the latter is south of Walnut Creek Park, a San Dimas city park along Walnut Creek, which drains Puddingstone Reservoir to the west into the San Gabriel Valley. The dam is surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains and has an incoming flow from the San Dimas Creek. The dam controls flooding from San Dimas Creek, a major San Gabriel Mountains drainage and tributary of the San Gabriel River. The dam diverts floodwater to Puddingstone Reservoir, protecting the area in and around San Dimas. [6]
