Development began in the 1870s as street car lines were extended to the area. The area was considered one of Louisville's most fashionable in its early years with many affluent white families building elegant mansion homes on Walnut, Chestnut Street, and Jefferson Streets, while working class blacks and whites lived in shotgun houses on adjacent streets.
Check's Cafe is located at the intersection of Hickory and Burnett Streets and is among Louisville's better-known restaurants. Manual Stadium is located in Schnitzelburg. Schnitzelburg is known for its number of "Shotgun-Style" homes where the homes are built narrowly with rooms being situated generally one after the other in a long row.
The first homes in the area were laid out in the 1820s along the newly completed Louisville to Lexington turnpike, referred to in that stretch as Story Avenue. Two of the first landowners in the area, Whig Party loyalist George Buchanan and Isaac Stewart, had the new community's streets named after major Whig Party members, such as John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster and Henry Clay.
