The declaration \usepackage[english]{babel} loads hyphenation patterns for American English. If British English hyphenation patterns are preferred, then \usepackage[british]{babel} is the right choice. Instead of british one can also say UKenglish.

I've been trying to change the language of my LaTeX document by replacing \usepackage[swedish]{babel} with \usepackage[english]{babel} but I only get this message:! Package babel Error: You haven't loaded the option swedish yet. I've read in an other question at this forum that compiling enough would solve the problem, but that doesn't work for me.
english is a global option, so that it's passed to every package; the list of local options to babel is russian, ukrainian, english. So babel gets first the global option english and loads the language file english.ldf; then it loads russian.ldf and ukrainian.ldf but does nothing with english, because it has already read that option.
Try \usepackage[german, english]{babel} (or whatever the correct name of the German-language option in babel is); the last listed language will be the document default, so strings like "Proof" will be in it.
To be precise, inputenc makes sure the umlauts etc. in the source are read correctly; babel makes sure the correct hyphenation patterns are used and changes the language of text strings like Table of Contents; fontenc changes the font encoding in the PDF, otherwise an ä would be created as a combination of a and ¨, which looks worse and makes copy-paste harder.
