I was taking 500 mg once a day and then twice a day. Then ran out for a while. Now since I am getting back on track after a few years the dr said to take “at least 2000 (2 500 mg pills twice a day). Reading online I saw a rare side effect called lactic acidosis. Has anyone experienced that?
We take our meds in general broken into 4 times a day (most times have different pills not that we take the same meds 4 times a day). When we wake up we each take our thyroid meds, bp pills, and diuretics. We do not eat breakfast as we wake late - close to lunch time. We each take one of our metformin at lunch. Husband may take 1/2 of a ...
When I was younger (say 40 years ago) medications would generally say something like "take 4 times a day, 4 hours apart" or "take 3 times a day, 6 hours apart" - all of which gave one guidance to take the medication over a 12 hour period. Therefore I have this idea in my mind that meds (unless otherwise specified ) should be spread over 12 hours.
I take 2500mg of the regular metformin daily and I divide it. 1,000mg when I get up in the morning, 500mg at lunch and 1,000 before bedtime. That seems to work best for me (and I do take it on an empty stomach but you have to find what works for you).
I am a 47 yo male and have been a type 2 diabetic for about 5 years due to really poor eating and exercise habits. My last blood work was in August and my A1C level was 8.7%, so the doc increased my Metformin from 500 mg once daily to 1000 mg twice daily.
I found often I would either forget completely or double dose. So I now fill the weekly pill box up with 3 pills a day, so I know by looking at it if I remembered to take a dose. For example, I normally take my 2nd dose around 9:30-10 am, but I was out playing tennis and totally forgot to bring it with me. When I returned home I forgot too.
Just today, I have increased from 500 MG once a day, to 500 MG twice a day. I am trying to take the Metformin immediately after lunch and immediately after dinner. The doses are about 7 hours apart.
I take 1000mg Metformin twice daily. I started on 500mg ER twice daily, but when my dosage was upped, the ER was not offered in 1000mg pills. I like them better so I don't have to take 2 extra pills daily. I already take a handful of blood pressure meds, so this is better. I have had no GI issues with Met. Everyone is different I guess.
I have noticed brain fog off/on since starting Metformin, with my doctor increasing it to 1000mg in November, and now 2000mg (which is the dose for PCOS Insulin resistance). I’ve been taking the 2000mg for a week now and feel absolutely horrendous, upset stomach - multiple toilet breaks per day!
Endo Anne Peters states in her book Conquering Diabetes that metformin "is at its strongest overnight". Another source tells me that metformin works for approximately 4 to 8 hours. Putting these two bits of information together I concluded that taking metformin at midnight or 1 am is the thing to do, and I have followed that routine for some time.
