Metformin does cause gastrointestinal side effects but not mood swing, GI side effects can be mitigated by slow release preparation. Even if you are taking it for prediabetes it is still worth taking as it delays the onset of diabetes itself. It is also the first choice among all the antidiabetics available.
Metformin is still the most widely used Type II diabetes medicine. Everyone is different and it really is an individual reaction. My A1C is usually 6.8/6.9 and take the drug anywhere from right before eating to 1/2 hour before (so I don't forget!) along with 10 mg Glipizide at wakeup, noon, and supper.
My PCP told me that Metformin lowers Vit B12 and that in 4 months she will check it since I just started it in June 2024. I am 72. My mom and dad took Metformin for years and they also lost weight, they started to eat small portions of everything within their diet but they never complained about other side effects. Thanks for your input.

I have been on 750 mg er metformin for about 2 years. I was reluctant to take it because of side effects. Those went away after a few weeks. My A1C went from 6.8 to 5.3. I have lost about 45 lbs and watch my carbs and sugars more closely. I have heard of the lactic acidosis problem however for me the effects of diabetes scare me more than that.
Hi, Was on Metformin as type 2 right around 7.0 a1c. Was over a year, did not seem to change my numbers a lot, but kept it in range. Then all the side effect started in, I told my doctor I stopped taking it, and side effect stopped within days. So 3 months later not much change taking nothing.
Morning Annabelle, I have gastroparesis and severe small, large colon motility. I tried that med for its side effects for 60 days. I’m not diabetic. It is used for the side effects sometimes. It did not help. The side effects are diarrhea but it didn’t give me that. I had all my diagnosis's prior to trying Metformin.
For some people, side effects of prednisone, as well as the inflammation that brings PMR, might be alleviated by berberine, an OTC plant-based drug. I had taken this before, when excessive night urination suggested my body was not metabolizing sugars fast enough.
Male, 68. On Wegovy for weight loss 3 months now at the 1.7 dose. I have lost 30 pounds. I no longer have high blood pressure. Very few doctors know anything about how Wegovy works or how to deal with the side effects. The manufacturer is of no help at all. You do get through the side effects over time there is a hormone effect that happens to ...
Years ago with my doctor's permission, I switched from metformin to berberine, a plant product that has been used medically for thousands of years. It keeps my fasting levels under control as well as metformin did and without side effects. However, no medicine or supplement should be expected to do the job by itself.
