Lapeer County (/ ləˈpɪər / lə-PEER) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 88,619. [3] The county seat is Lapeer. [4] The county was created on September 18, 1822, and was fully organized on February 2, 1835. The name is a corruption of the French la pierre, which means "the stone". [5]

The prison was opened in 1987, and has six housing units currently used to house approximately 1,200 male Michigan Department of Corrections prisoners.
