Bursa Malaysia was established in 1930, when the Singapore Stockbrokers Association became an official organization of securities in Malaya. In 1937, it was re-registered as the Stockbrokers' Association of Malaya, but it still did not trade public shares. In 1960, the Malayan Stock Exchange was formed and public trading started on 9 May that year.
In 2006, Bursa Malaysia partnered with FTSE to provide a suite of indices for the Malaysian market, to enhance the KLCI. FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was one of the indices created to replace the KLCI. The new index was adopted on 6 July 2009, with the opening value taken from the closing value of the old KLCI on 3 July 2009. [2]
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Index was launched on 26 June 2006 except for FTSE Bursa Malaysia Hijrah Shariah Index and FTSE Bursa Malaysia EMAS Shariah Index which were launched on 22 January 2007 and 21 May 2007 respectively.
