The " Sermon of Saint Anthony to the Fish " (Portuguese: Sermão de Santo António aos Peixes) is a sermon written by Portuguese Jesuit priest António Vieira, preached to the congregation at the Church of Saint Anthony in São Luís do Maranhão, Colonial Brazil, on 13 June 1654. [1] It is Vieira's most famous work.
Saint Anthony Preaching to the Fishes, c. 1630 The story of Anthony "preaching to the fish" originated in Rimini , where he had gone to preach. When heretics there treated him with contempt, Anthony was said to have gone to the shoreline, where he began to preach at the water's edge until a great crowd of fish was seen gathered before him.
