On 2 February 2009 a lightning strike from a thunderstorm in the area started a bushfire approximately ten kilometres from Barmedman, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service declared a Section 44 for the bushfire at 3am AEDT 3 February 2009. Sokaluk lit fires in the Gippsland region of Victoria on Black Saturday and was ultimately sentenced to 17 years and 9 months in prison for 10 counts of arson causing death. [1]
