A line was opened from north Bundaberg to Mount Perry in 1884. The Mount Perry railway line required the construction of the Boolboonda Tunnel.
A branch line connecting to Maryborough was also opened from Theebine, south of Tiaro, to Kilkivan in 1886, and was later extended to Murgon, Proston, Windera, Kingaroy, Tarong and Nanango (the latter by 1911). Nanango's claim to be fourth-oldest is based on the first establishment of commercial premises, which is Goode's Inn. On that basis, it is the fourth olderst, following Ipswich (then called Limestone), Drayton, and Maryborough. However, Nanango was not surveyed as a town site until 1861, and several other towns were surveyed before that. [11]
