Hummels Wharf is a census-designated place within the township. Small creeks drain the township into the Susquehanna River. Flooding occurs in low-lying areas on an annual basis. A few areas have persistent standing water with most rains. Ground water is being monitored by the USGS.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km 2), of which 1.8 square miles (4.7 km 2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km 2) (2.66%) is water. Shamokin Dam sits on the western bank of the Susquehanna River, just south of the confluence of the river's west and north branches.
Sunbury is the largest principal city of the Sunbury-Lewisburg-Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, a Combined Statistical Area that includes the Sunbury (Northumberland County), Lewisburg (Union County), and Selinsgrove (Snyder County) micropolitan areas, [29] [30] which had a combined population of 173,726 at the 2000 census.

The Adam T. Bower Memorial Dam (also the Sunbury Fabridam or Fabri Dam) is the world's longest inflatable dam and it impounds the Susquehanna River. [3] The dam is located just below the confluence of the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna, between the towns of Shamokin Dam and Sunbury. The dam is 2,100 feet (640 m) long.
The United States Office of Management and Budget [16] has designated Northumberland County as the Sunbury, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area (μSA). As of the 2010 census [ 17 ] the micropolitan area ranked 2nd most populous in the State of Pennsylvania and the 37th most populous in the United States with a population of 94,528.
