Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park. The sandy beach at Portmellon is safe for bathing and there is a public slipway for launching boats. The beach is set in a small cove, a 20-minute walk from Mevagissey. The beach is around 150 metres long but is completely covered at high tide.

Mevagissey (/ ˌ m ɛ v ə ˈ ɡ ɪ z i /; Cornish: Lannvorek) is a village, fishing port and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. [1] The village is approximately five miles (8 km) south of St Austell . [ 2 ]

Mayfield is bounded to the north by the Glen River Valley, an aquiferous geological formation produced by a receding glacier during the last ice age.Habitats, flora and fauna within the area include the small cudweed and the sand martin, a migratory bird species that returns from North Africa each spring to breed in the porous sand cliffs along sections of the river valley north.
