José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras (Spanish pronunciation: [xoˈse ðe sam maɾˈtin] ⓘ; 25 February 1778 – 17 August 1850), nicknamed "the Liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru", [1] was an Argentine general and the primary leader of the southern and central parts of South America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire who served as the Protector of Peru.
He was educated in Spain, and fought in the Spanish Army during the Peninsular War. In 1812 he returned to South America and fought against the Spanish in Argentina, Chile and Peru alongside other liberators such as Bernardo O'Higgins and Simon Bolivar. By the mid 1820's San Martin had fallen out with Bolivar and was back in Europe.
The Plaza San Martín was inaugurated on July 27, 1921 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Peru. The design, ornamentation, furnishing, and gardening of the plaza was designed by Spanish architect Manuel Piqueras Cotolí. Pueblo Libre was founded in 1557 as Magdalena Vieja, before being renamed Free Town (Pueblo Libre in Spanish) in 1821 by José de San Martín. The name was given because of the great patriotism and desire for freedom San Martin saw from the people. Simón Bolívar, one of the liberators of South America, lived in Pueblo Libre.
