The Sandhills, often written Sand Hills, is a region of mixed-grass prairie on grass-stabilized sand dunes in north-central Nebraska, covering just over one quarter of the state. The dunes were designated a National Natural Landmark in 1984.
In 1860, a project to build a 190-mile-long (310 km) road from Nebraska City to Fort Kearney was initiated by the Nebraska City community and Otoe County Commissioners in what became one of the most traveled roads in the west as part of the Denver Trail. In 1879, the Nebraska Legislature passed a law providing all section lines become public roads.
The highway continues north into the Nebraska Sandhills, turning to the northeast and east where it intersects with N-2 west of Hemingford. Both highways turn north and about 25 miles (40 km) later enter Crawford and intersect US 20 .

The northern segment of Nebraska Highway 27 begins at Nebraska Highway 2 at Ellsworth. It goes north through the Sand Hills to Gordon, where it intersects U.S. Highway 20. It continues north out of Gordon and ends at the South Dakota border. The roadway continues in South Dakota as South Dakota Highway 391. [1] [5]
