Cleveland County Schools is a PK–12 graded school district serving Cleveland County, North Carolina. The system was formed from the merger of Kings Mountain City Schools, Shelby City Schools and the former Cleveland County Schools system in 2004. Its 29 schools serve 16,417 students as of the 2010–2011 school year.
Shelby High School was first mentioned in local newspapers of the time as being established in June 1877, by Professor J.A. Smith, with G.W. Sharpe and Miss Laura Sharp as instructors. Shelby moved to its current high school building location in 1960, with the dedication of the school being held on September 10, 1961. [3]
The school was approved in 1965, after Cleveland County residents voted 3,420 to 1,615 to authorize US$ 3,250,000 in construction bonds for two new high schools. Crest High School would open in the fall of 1967. [4] In 1986–87, Crest High School was a Blue Ribbon School. [5]

Zachary High School was established in 1912. It was segregated. The Rosenwald Fund helped establish a school for African Americans, Zachary Colored School, in 1934, but there was no public high school open to African Americans in Zachary until 1954. Zachary High School desegregated in the 1970s. [2]
