I'd suggest a jacketed bullet (with cannalure) to start and starting loads right out of your reloading manual (s), with bullets seated to the cannalure, roll crimp into the cannalure and don't worry abut OAL for now. As Iowegan suggests, a faster powder is better for a 38 Special and can also be used in 357 Mag. for mild to mid loads.

I am loading 44 special and will be running them through a Ruger Redhawk Hunter. The only powder for a 200 grain I found was Vitori 340. I have all the manuals but they are the lighter loads.
Need data for 115Gr FMJ 9mm bullet w/Unique powder. I've finished setting up my Dillon 550C press and the first round to be loaded is 9mm Luger. There are three firearms I intend to use the round in, one of them being an early-build Ruger P85. Projectile is a 115 Gr FMJ bullet from Rocky Mountain Reloading.
danlbobb, I have purchased the "Hodgdon Annual Reloading Manual" for 5 years now & it always has interesting articles in it. This year there is a good 1 on .45acp. Whitesheep, you are right about the good info in the hardcopy's of the powder mfg's reloading books Western Powder's & Alliant's are both good & free.
2013 alliant reloading manual lists red dot in 45 all the way up to 230grain. Bullseye is a long proven 9mm and 45 load and its faster than TG. I don't have any experience with TG as I just bought a pound to try, but haven't used any yet.

I think I could do about anything I need with those two, pistol wise. I just received mine in the mail & it covers shotshell, pistol & rifle for Alliant powders.
