A fetus born prior to the 37th week of gestation is considered to be preterm. A preterm baby is likely to be premature and consequently faces increased risk of morbidity and mortality. An estimated due date is given by Naegele's rule. According to the WHO, a preterm birth is defined as "babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed."
In low risk pregnancies, most health care providers approve flying until about 36 weeks of gestational age. [146] Most airlines allow pregnant women to fly short distances at less than 36 weeks, and long distances at less than 32 weeks. [147] Many airlines require a doctor's note that approves flying, especially at over 28 weeks. [147]
Gestational age: 5 weeks and 0 days until 5 weeks and 6 days old. 36–42 days from last menstruation. Embryonic age: Week nr 4. 3 weeks old. 22–28 days from fertilization. The embryo measures 4 mm (1 ⁄ 8 in) in length and begins to curve into a C shape. The heart bulges, further develops, and begins to beat in a regular rhythm.
Extreme preterm [2] is less than 28 weeks, very early preterm birth is between 28 and 32 weeks, early preterm birth occurs between 32 and 34 weeks, late preterm birth is between 34 and 36 weeks' gestation. [8] These babies are also known as premature babies or colloquially preemies (American English) [9] or premmies (Australian English). [10]
Fundal height, when expressed in centimeters, roughly corresponds to gestational age in weeks between 16 and 36 weeks for a vertex fetus. When a tape measure is unavailable, finger widths are used to estimate centimeter (week) distances from a corresponding anatomical landmark.
The first trimester is from the last menstrual period through the 13th week, the second trimester is 14th–28/29th week, and the third trimester is 29/30th–42nd week. [6] Birth normally occurs at a gestational age of about 40 weeks, though it is common for births to occur from 37 to 42 weeks. [ 6 ]
This scoring allows for the estimation of age in the range of 26 weeks to 44 weeks. The New Ballard Score is an extension of the above to include extremely pre-term babies , i.e., up to 20 weeks. The scoring relies on the intra-uterine changes that the fetus undergoes during its maturation.
Late preterm infants are infants born at a gestational age between 34 + 0 ⁄ 7 weeks and 36 + 6 ⁄ 7 weeks. [1] They have higher morbidity and mortality rates than term infants (gestational age ≥37 weeks) due to their relative physiologic and metabolic immaturity, even though they are often the size and weight of some term infants.
