Before the U.S. Route system, this route was a system of interconnected highways from New Mexico to Oklahoma, considered a part of the Texas highway system from New Mexico to Amarillo and a portion of the Ozark Trails. In Amarillo, the Ozark route split off to a more southerly route, while general low-grade roads continued east.
The Route 66 Bridge over the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railroad, in Wheeler County, Texas near Shamrock, Texas, was built in 1932. It carried Route 66 traffic until 1960. It now carries the south frontage road of Interstate 40 over the former Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railway right-of-way. [ 2 ]
The current route was first designated on May 23, 1951, as FM 1431, and ran from US 281 in Marble Falls to the community of Smithwick approximately 11.3 miles (18.2 km) to the east. The designation was changed to RM 1431 on October 1, 1956. The route was extended westward into Llano County and to SH 29 on November 21, 1956.
