Saginaw (/ ˈ s æ ɡ ɪ n ɔː /) is a city in and the seat of Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. [4] It had a population of 44,202 at the 2020 census. [5] Located along the Saginaw River, Saginaw is adjacent to Saginaw Charter Township and considered part of Greater Tri-Cities region of Central Michigan.
The area around Saginaw was first settled in 1820. The section east of the river was established in about 1850, and as industry moved into the surrounding timber lands, the village of East Saginaw grew tremendously. It was granted a city charter in 1859, and by the 1870s, fifty mills were operating along the eastern bank of the river.
Saginaw Township predates its parent county. When Saginaw Township was organized as part of Oakland County in 1831, in accordance with an 1830 act of Michigan's Territorial Legislature, it covered all of today's Saginaw County (organized in 1835) and part of Bay, Genesee and Midland counties. In 1848, the Cushways moved onto a farm, and in 1850 sold the house to Jacob Voght, a grocer and farmer. In 1869, Fort Saginaw was razed, and the Cuchway House was moved to 1404 South Fayette. After the turn of the century, the house was purchased by the Narcarto Family, who owned it at least until the 1980s. [3]
