Brixton is an area of South London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth, England. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. [3] Brixton experienced a rapid rise in population during the 19th century as communications with central London improved.

The area is dominated by the Angell Town Estate, a housing estate known for its poverty, deprivation and gang subculture. [1] [2] The Angell Town Estate was originally built in the 1970s as a set of blocks linked by a deck-access system. [3]

Brixton Hundred or the Hundred of Brixton was for many centuries a group of parishes used for meetings and taxation of their respective great estates in the north east of the county of Surrey, England. Its area has been entirely absorbed by the growth of London; with its name currently referring to the Brixton district. [1]
In Surrey it was bounded by Brixton hundred to the north, Kingston hundred and Copthorne hundred to the west, Reigate hundred and Tandridge hundred to the south. [2] In the east its boundary was with the Bromley and Beckenham hundred of Kent. In 1831, the hundred occupied 36,470 acres (147.59 km 2). [3]
The area of the modern borough had historically been part of the county of Surrey, and generally corresponds to the three ancient parishes of Lambeth, Clapham and Streatham. The parish of Lambeth included the archiepiscopal Lambeth Palace, and formed part of the Hundred of Brixton.
