London Contemporary Dance School and its partner company, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, were founded in 1966 under the governance of the Contemporary Dance Trust. Sir Robert Paul Cohan CBE (26 March 1925 – 13 January 2021) [1] [2] was a British dancer, choreographer, and the founding artistic director of The Place, London Contemporary Dance School, and London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT), which he directed for 20 years. [3]
Later in the 1970s, the Contemporary Ballet Trust established the London Contemporary Dance School and the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, both of which were formed at The Place; in 1994, the latter body was succeeded by the Richard Alston Dance Company which remained in residence at The Place until 2020.
