It's a sport in many more countries than many others and doesn't have economic barriers like equestrian, sailing, etc. Also at the highest competitive level it is well organized and marketed. World Athletics could learn a lot from from the World Surf League.
In any case, if WA ever starts taking away events (the 50k rw doesn't count since that was IOC mandated and they replaced it with the rw relay), I think that probably would be a death knell for the sport. It would alienate fans and athletes and it's not like getting rid of a few events draws in new fans.
06-29-2003, 03:42 AM. Re: 1970's CBS Sport Spectacular-Track and Field. I think this track program began in 1969. Personal highlights were Frank Shorter upsetting the Soviets in the 1970 U.S. v. Soviet Union dual meet in Leningrad. Shorter ran 28:24, which at the time was the second fastest American time.
