In 1965, the state of Missouri took control of the site to serve as a memorial to Dunklin, who is credited as the father of Missouri's public education system. The site covers 1.37 acres (0.55 ha) and is operated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The cemetery is surrounded by limestone walls and overlooks the Mississippi River.
The Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri has been in use as a cemetery since 1820. Ironton was designated county seat in 1857, soon after the formation of Iron County. [6] Like the county, Ironton was named from the deposits of iron ore found in the vicinity. [7] A post office called Ironton has been in operation since 1858. [8] In early August 1861, Brigader General Sam Grant led a force of four regiments in the area.
