The Katipunan in Cavite was divided into two councils: the Magdiwang (led by Alvarez) and the Magdalo (led by Baldomero Aguinaldo, Emilio's cousin). At first, these two Katipunan councils cooperated with each other in the battlefield, as in the battles of Binakayan and Dalahican , where they won their first major victory over the Spaniards.
Upon capturing Noveleta, the Magdiwang were reinforced and under the orders of Gen. Alvarez, the Magdiwang built a number of entrenchments outside of the city better known as Bateria numbers 1, 2 and 3, and used some captured emplacements (a small redoubt, trenches and a fortification) to prepare for the Spanish counterattack.
The Magdalo was often militarily separated and conflicted with the Magdiwang faction's chapter in Cavite. When the Manila -based Katipunan supreme leader Andres Bonifacio went to Cavite to mediate between the two factions, the Magdalo argued to replace the Katipunan with a revolutionary government.
The Imus Assembly was the meeting held between the Magdalo and Magdiwang factions of the Katipunan at Imus, Cavite, Philippines, on December 31, 1896, the day following the execution of José Rizal. This was convened in order to settle the leadership dispute between the two factions. [1]
With the establishment of the Katipunan, Andrés Bonifacio requested his wife, Gregoria de Jesús, to create a flag for the society. De Jesús devised a simple red flag bearing the society's acronym, KKK, in white and arranged horizontally at the center. It became the society's first flag. Some Katipunan members used other variations.
Rivalry and tension existed between the Magdiwang and Magdalo factions over jurisdiction and authority, and Álvarez, as Magdiwang head, invited Bonifacio, as Presidente Supremo ("Supreme President") [5] of the Katipunan, to mediate over them. Bonifacio was seen as partial to the Magdiwang probably due to his kinship ties with Álvarez.
