Charlestown is situated on the leeward side of the island of Nevis near the southern end of Pinney's Beach. Charlestown was originally called Bath Bay in reference to Bath Stream, a stream noted for its curative waters. [1] It became the chief town after Jamestown, Nevis's first settlement, was inundated by a tidal wave in 1680.
The Museum of Nevis History in Charlestown is housed in the restored Georgian stone building which is near the mostly wooden building where Alexander Hamilton was born. A series of earthquakes during the 18th century severely damaged most of the colonial-era stone buildings of Charlestown.
The current museum building was originally constructed as Treasury Building in 1894. [1] It was once used as the entry port from the nearby pier. [2] In 1996, the treasury moved to a new building. [3] In 2002, the museum was finally opened. [4]
In 1607, Captain John Smith stopped at Nevis for five days on his way to founding the first successful settlement in Virginia.
