Chelem is a small beach in Yucatán, Mexico, in the Progreso Municipality. It is near Progreso , on the coast north of the state capital of Mérida . It is not very large, and consists mostly of small houses and restaurants.

The beach which is part of the northern Yucatan peninsula faces northerly winds in the winter; as such the beachfront is mostly covered with white sand. Population is quite friendly. Progreso is one of the youngest towns in the Yucatán. [1] Juan Miguel Castro Martín, owner of several sisal haciendas, including an estate called Hacienda San Pedro Chimay was the founder of the Port of Progreso. [3] He began urging development of a new port in 1840 to further the henequen trade. [4]
