The United States Forest Service Recreation Residence Program is a residential recreation program of the United States Forest Service. [6]The program was established in 1915 to provide summer homes and seasonal recreation cabins to permit holders.

It offers 33 cabins and sites for 22 recreational vehicles. In 2011 the Resort took over management of the Forest Service campgrounds by the lake. Because the Elk Lake Guard Station is a well-preserved example of an early Forest Service guard station, the ranger cabin at the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 23 April 2009.
