Bhim Rao Ambedkar College is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. It was established on 8 February 1991 during the birth centenary year of B. R. Ambedkar . It is funded by the Delhi Government to cater to the needs of higher education in Delhi.
The university was renamed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University in 1991 through the Andhra Pradesh Open University (Amendment) Act, 1991, [3] named after the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.
It owes its genesis to Dr. C. R. Reddy, its founding vice-chancellor. The college was part of the Department of Arts, Commerce and Law College from the beginning, but was reconstructed as a separate college of law on 14 April 1989. The college was renamed as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College of Law to honour Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on 10 May 1991.
In 1882, the college became an aided institution and affiliated itself with Calcutta University. Its affiliation later changed to the University of Allahabad in 1889 and then to Agra University, now Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, in 1927. Today it is a grant-in-aid institution and also runs a few self-financing courses.
