The station opened on December 24, 1905, as a station on the Keihin Electric Railway. It closed on June 22, 1929, but reopened as Aokibashi Station (青木橋駅) on March 29, 1930. Six days later, it was renamed Keihin Kanagawa Station (京浜神奈川駅). The station was renamed Kanagawa Station on April 20, 1956.

Tsurumi University traces its origin to Tsurumi Girls' High School, which was established in 1925. In 1953, Tsurumi Girls' Junior College was established, and it was chartered as Tsurumi Girls' University in 1963. In 1973, the name was changed to Tsurumi University, when boys were admitted. It continues as a co-ed university.
The university was founded in 1928 by Yoshimori Yoneda (米田吉盛) as Yokohama Academy (横浜学院, Yokohama gakuin).It was an evening school for the working youth.
