Alberta Hunter (April 1, 1895 – October 17, 1984) was an American jazz and blues singer and songwriter from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] After twenty years of working as a nurse, Hunter resumed her singing career in 1977.
Recordings by other classic female blues singers, including Sara Martin, Alberta Hunter, and Bessie Smith soon followed. [1] [3] In 1947, the song was revived by the jump blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon as "Ain't Nobody's Business". [4] It was the best-selling race record of 1949 [5] and inspired numerous adaptations of the song. [1]
The first line sets the theme for the song: "Gee but it's hard to love someone when that someone don't love you." Hunter sang it during her engagement at the Dreamland Cafe, in Chicago, where she performed with Joe "King" Oliver's band. [1] Blues singer Bessie Smith recorded the song with piano accompaniment by Clarence Williams. [2]
