Bitou Municipality (Afrikaans: Bitou Munisipaliteit; Xhosa: uMasipala wase Bitou), formerly known as Plettenberg Bay Municipality, is a local municipality within the Garden Route District Municipality, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Its municipality code is WC047.
Plettenberg Bay, nicknamed Plett, [2] is the primary town of the Bitou Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.According to the census of 2001, the town had a population of 29,149.
The council of the Garden Route District Municipality consists of thirty-five councillors. Fourteen councillors are directly elected by party-list proportional representation, and twenty-one are appointed by the councils of the local municipalities in the district: six by George, four by Mossel Bay, three each by Oudtshoorn and Knysna, two each by Hessequa and Bitou, and one by Kannaland.
The Bitou Local Municipality council consists of thirteen members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.Seven councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in seven wards, while the remaining six are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
