Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is a public university with two campuses in Northwest Indiana; its main campus is in Hammond with a branch campus [2] in Westville.It is part of the Purdue University system and offers more than 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to approximately 6,200 students with more than 64,000 alumni.
The park was first purchased in 1964 for flood control, but the river was straightened in 1975 forming the oxbow. [1] It was dedicated to George W. Carlson, a 32-year member of the Hammond City Council who had played a key role in the park's formation, [ 2 ] on October 7, 1998.

In December 2017 the Gabis family announced that Purdue University Northwest would assume operation of the arboretum, with the name change and management effective January 31, 2018.
