A litre is a cubic decimetre, which is the volume of a cube 10 centimetres × 10 centimetres × 10 centimetres (1 L ≡ 1 dm 3 ≡ 1000 cm 3). Hence 1 L ≡ 0.001 m 3 ≡ 1000 cm 3; and 1 m 3 (i.e. a cubic metre, which is the SI unit for volume) is exactly 1000 L.
On 7 April 1795, the metric system was formally defined in French law using six units. Three of these are related to volume: the stère (1 m 3) for volume of firewood; the litre (1 dm 3) for volumes of liquid; and the gramme, for mass—defined as the mass of one cubic centimetre of water at the temperature of melting ice. The molar volume has the SI unit of cubic metres per mole (m 3 /mol), [1] although it is more typical to use the units cubic decimetres per mole (dm 3 /mol) for gases, and cubic centimetres per mole (cm 3 /mol) for liquids and solids.
