Hifu (被風, 被布, 披風 （ ひふ, ひふ, ひふ ）) is a kind of jacket traditionally worn over a kimono. Towards the end of the Edo Period (1603–1867), it was worn by men in cultural positions, such as by chajin (tea ceremony masters) and haijin (haiku poets). It later came to be worn by women. [1]
One of her best known patterns is the Haori, a Japanese inspired jacket that was first published in 2017 in Making. [ 1 ] [ 7 ] Originally released under the name Kimono Jacket, Gordy changed the name to the Haori in 2018 following cultural appropriation concerns raised by members of the online sewing community.
The haori (羽織) is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono. Resembling a shortened kimono with no overlapping front panels ( okumi ), the haori typically features a thinner collar than that of a kimono, and is sewn with the addition of two thin, triangular panels at either side seam.
Ōshima-tsumugi kimono are hugely valued for their detailed kasuri patterns and deep black color. They are known as one of the most expensive silk fabrics in Japan. [ 6 ] The cheapest piece costs about 300,000 yen per bolt, or tanmono, and the highest quality costs several million yen.

The first instances of kimono-like garments in Japan were traditional Chinese clothing introduced to Japan via Chinese envoys in the Kofun period (300–538 CE; the first part of the Yamato period), through immigration between the two countries and envoys to the Tang dynasty court leading to Chinese styles of dress, appearance, and culture becoming extremely popular in Japanese court society.
