The league was established at a meeeting on 29 July 1913 at the Upper George Hotel in Halifax. The following year, the Halifax Parish Cricket League began with 10 members - Triangle, Greetland, Sowerby Bridge, Stainland, Illingworth St Mary's, Lightcliffe, Siddal, Clifton Britannia, Norwood Green and Elland Edge [2] Six of the original clubs are still playing in the league.

The village has two sports clubs, Copley Cricket Club who play in the Halifax Cricket League and the Old Rishworthian rugby team. Both clubs are well established and Old Rishworthians currently play in Yorkshire 1 (level 7) of the RFU National League structure.

Denholme Cricket Club play in the Craven and District Cricket League and have a first and second 11 along with several junior teams. Denholme Cricket club 1XI play in the 2nd division of this league and the 2nd XI were promoted to division 4. Denholme Clough Cricket Club play in the Towergate Halifax Cricket League - Terry Wynne.
Outlane Cricket Club, who currently play in the Halifax Cricket League, objected to the building of the motorway in the 1960s as it would go through their ground. However the Ministry of Transport turned down the objection. Outlane has a golf course that borders the motorway.
Alex Lees was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, where he attended Holy Trinity Senior School. His introduction to cricket was with Bradshaw Cricket Club in the Halifax Cricket League, quickly moving from the junior ranks into senior cricket before he was a teenager. Lees left Bradshaw and move to Illingworth at the age of 13.
The East Anglian Premier Cricket League, currently known as the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League for sponsorship purposes, is the top level of competition for recreational club cricket in the English region of East Anglia.
