David Lagercrantz is the youngest of five siblings. His father was author and editor-in-chief Olof Lagercrantz (1911–2002), whose parents were banker Carl Lagercrantz and Countess Agnes Hamilton; the latter was the great-granddaughter of poet and historian Erik Gustaf Geijer.
Otto Lagercrantz was born at Näsby in Jönköping County, Sweden. Lagercrantz graduated from high school in Uppsala in 1887. He then studied at Uppsala University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1890 and his licentiate degree in 1895. He completed his Ph.D. in 1898 with a dissertation titled Zur griechischen Lautgeschichte.

The Lagercrantz family is a Swedish noble family, introduced at the Swedish house of nobility in 1682. The oldest known ancestor of the Lagercranz family was Jacob Larsson Gavelius (died 1656), an assessor at the Göta Court of Appeal .

Carl Hugo Lagercrantz (born 18 April 1945) is a Swedish pediatrician.He is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the Karolinska Institute and is a former member of both the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, which awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the assembly's five-member working body, the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. Carl Fredrik Bengt Lagercrantz (12 March 1887 – 22 July 1924) was a Swedish sport shooter who competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics. [1] He won a silver medal in the team running deer, double shots competition.
