Dirk Kat opened his first grocery store in Velsen-Noord, Netherlands in 1941 but it had to close due to the German occupation. In 1949, he opened the first self-service store in the Netherlands under the name Kijkgrijp. In 1950, he established joint purchasing with other grocers for low prices.
