HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) is an intelligent print driver that supports a broad range of HP print devices, such as LaserJet and various MFPs. Developed by Hewlett-Packard , HP UPD combines a general purpose driver ( XPSDrv , UniDrv , or PSCRIPT ), print control, and HP proprietary extensions.
In September 1994 HP introduced the Color LaserJet, the corporation's first color laser printer. The printer had an average cost per page of less than 10 cents. The Color LaserJet offered 2 ppm color printing and 10 ppm for black text, 8MB of memory, 45 built-in fonts, a 1,250-sheet paper tray and enhanced PCL 5 with color.
The LaserJet 4 series was discontinued in the 1990s, and Hewlett-Packard recommended the HP LaserJet 5 series as a replacement for the 4 series. However the driver for the HP LaserJet 4 exists in most, even older, software products and is a popular substitute driver for other PCL compatible printers.
