King Alexander I of Yugoslavia chose Bled as his summer residence in 1922, due to its mild climate. [1] Austrian Rudolf von Gelmini designed the original layout and in 1937 the first nine holes of the course was completed, marking the birth of golf in the region. In 1938 it became the only 18-hole course in Yugoslavia prior to the Second World War.
Hotel shortly became a meeting point for Austrian elite as well as a vacation destination for wealthy foreigners. In 1894, it featured thermal baths, a casino and an oriental coffee house. After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the hotel was renamed to Grand Hotel Toplice by the new owner.
Bled has hosted the World Rowing Championships four times, in 1966, 1979, 1989, and most recently in 2011. [9] In 1961 the Grand Hotel Toplice in Bled was the site of one of the most important international tournaments in chess history.
The restored resort is a 216-room hotel with 4 suites, golf course, spa, and conference facility. The spa wing accommodates additional rooms and a full-service spa. The hotel contains a 130-seat restaurant along with a fully restored colonial-style tavern in the Stone House, with original, massive stone walls and beams dating to 1806.
Since the hotel first opened, the Sandy Lane Resort has been known for its golf courses. The first, The Old Nine, is a nine-hole course and was built along with the hotel in 1961. [9] The other two, The Green Monkey and The Country Club, are both 18-hole championship courses and were designed by the well-known golf course designer Tom Fazio. [10]
