King Alexander I of Yugoslavia chose Bled as his summer residence in 1922, due to its mild climate. [1] Austrian Rudolf von Gelmini designed the original layout and in 1937 the first nine holes of the course was completed, marking the birth of golf in the region. In 1938 it became the only 18-hole course in Yugoslavia prior to the Second World War.
Hotel shortly became a meeting point for Austrian elite as well as a vacation destination for wealthy foreigners. In 1894, it featured thermal baths, a casino and an oriental coffee house. After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the hotel was renamed to Grand Hotel Toplice by the new owner.

The deepest lake is the Wild Lake, reaching a depth of over 160 metres (520 ft), followed by Lake Družmir with the maximum depth of 87 metres (285 ft). Jezero is the Slovene word for lake.
