Mariposa County was one of the original 27 counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. While it began as the state's largest county, territory that was once part of Mariposa was ceded over time to form all or part of twelve other counties, including all of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern; and parts of San Benito, Mono, Inyo, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles.
At the time, Mariposa occupied 1 ⁄ 5 of the entire area of California and Agua Fria was named the county seat, but it was moved to Mariposa in 1852. [3] While Agua Fria held the seat, court and county business was conducted from the home of James Barney, the first county sheriff.
The Mariposa County Courthouse, 5088 Bullion Street, Mariposa, California. The Mariposa courthouse was designed and built by Fox & Shriver. It was finished in 1854. The total building costs came to $9,200. The first meeting was held on February 12, 1855. The clock and cupola were added in 1866.
In 1850, it was a booming trade center and the final destination for many new arrivals in California. It was Mariposa County's first Seat of Justice from February 18, 1850, to November 10, 1851. A post office was established October 7, 1851. In 1853, a 6-stamp quartz mill was established in Upper Agua Fria.
The Mariposa County Arts Council is the official Mariposa County, California, USA arts council.. Established in 1981, it runs under the California state arts council, the California Arts Council (CAC).
