Riders in the Sky is an American Western music and comedy group which began performing in 1977. [1] The band has released more than 40 albums, starred in a single-season self-titled television series on CBS, wrote and starred in an NPR syndicated radio drama Riders Radio Theater, and appeared in television series and films including as featured contributors to Ken Burns' Country Music.
In 1982 the band changed its name to Night Ranger after a country band, the Rangers, claimed a trademark infringement. [8] By this point, they had recorded their debut album Dawn Patrol for Boardwalk Records and done opening stints for ZZ Top and Ozzy Osbourne; the latter had employed Brad Gillis as a replacement guitarist for the recently deceased Randy Rhoads, in the spring and summer of 1982.
The first issues of the album were printed and ready to be shipped when a country band from California was found to have the same name. The band decided to name themselves Night Ranger after the song that Blades had written for the album, and Boardwalk proceeded to destroy every copy that had "Ranger" on it.
