Burbank devoted a lot of work to hybridizing two plum species, the apricot plum or Simon plum Prunus simonii and the Japanese plum Prunus salicina. He developed a number of cultivars from the hybrid, [ 2 ] [ 3 ] of which 'Climax' was particularly notable for its importance to the fruit shipping industry of California.
The oddly-shaped apple attracted the attention of Burbank, a famed grafter and budder of trees, plants and flowers. He called the new 'Delicious' variety "the finest-flavored apple in all the world." [ 10 ] It was also in 1893 that the Starks began their storied cooperation with Luther Burbank and his fantastic new varieties of fruits.

Whereas plumcots and apriplums are first-generation hybrids between a plum parent (P. salicina [1]) and an apricot (P. armeniaca), pluots and apriums are later-generations. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Both names "plumcot" and "apriplum" have been used for trees derived from a plum seed parent, and are therefore equivalent.
