St. Joseph was first platted in 1829, and the first lighthouse at the site, located on the shore, was built in 1832. Construction began on harbor piers in 1836, and by 1848 a beacon light had been established on the pier. The onshore lighthouse was replaced in 1859, and a new pierhead beacon was constructed on the south pier in 1870.
The lighthouse is a square tower of eight floors, built in rubble and coral to a height of 25 meters. It was raised 9 meters in 1953. [4] The lighthouse is also used today for aerial navigation thanks to additional lenses for aerial beams. Renovations to restore the lighthouse and install a new lighting system were announced in November 2023. [4]

The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1974 and listed as United States Coast Guard surplus property. The non-profit Cuckolds Island Fog Signal and Light Station Council was formed and submitted a 542-page proposal that was accepted and the deed transferred on May 8, 2006.
