The Dhaka City Corporation was dissolved by the Local Government (City Corporation) Amendment Bill 2011 on 29 November 2011, passed in the Parliament of Bangladesh, and formally ceased to exist on 1 December 2011, following the President's approval, [3] making way for a Dhaka North and a Dhaka South city corporations. Dhaka District shares borders with Gazipur and Tangail to the north, Munshiganj and Rajbari to the south, Narayanganj to the east and Manikganj to the west. The area is located on the bank of Buriganga river and situated in the western part of Dhaka City. To the north, there is Darus Salam Thana, to the northern east, there is Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana, to the east and south, there is Mohammadpur Thana and to the west, there is Buriganga river and Savar Upazila.
Hatirjheel Thana is a thana in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was formed in 2018 with the Hatirjheel project and its surrounding areas. The areas under this thana were earlier under the thanas of Ramna, Tejgaon Industrial Area and Rampura. [4] Hatirjheel Thana is a part of Dhaka North City Corporation.
The Dhaka North section housed 75,148 residents, whereas Dhaka South accommodated 26,789 residents, with a combined total of 27,487 households and an average household size of 3.7 members. [ 2 ] The recorded population in 2022 reflects a decrease from the 2011 figures, which stood at 147,643 individuals.
Dhaka South has a long history, including that of European arrival and colonization. The area was initially 45 km2, but expanded in 2017 to 109.2 km2 [ 4 ] and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) published Population and Housing Census 2022 count at 43,05,063 [ 5 ] giving the city a density of 39,409 people per km2.
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (formerly Zia International Airport), [222] located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of Dhaka city centre, is the largest and busiest international airport in the country. [223] Although built with an annual passenger-handling capacity of 8 million, [224] it handled more than 11 million passengers in 2023. [225]
